The Republic of Deseret

The Republic is not formally recognized by any of the great powers of North America (not even by Mexico) but is treated as independent anyway. It feels weak when compared to either the USA or the CSA, and has sought out alliances with the Sioux and Coyote; however, this process is made more difficult by some of the more unusual aspects of Mormon theology. Although it calls itself a republic it is really more of a theocracy. (It is a republic in which only “priesthood holders,” which are adult males within the LDS church) are allowed to vote; as a consequence the highest political offices in Deseret and the highest religious offices within the LDS are often held by overlapping leaders; Brigham Young is President of both Church and Republic. With maintaining its independence as a primary goal, the Republic carefully monitors all major political entities on the continent and attempts to move them over to supporting its independence. The recent immigration of Darius Hellstromme is hoped to provide better defenses. Hellstromme has discovered a significant deposit of ghost rock in Deseret territory near Provo. In addition, Deseret feels a great deal of suspicion — particularly since several of the Mormon Blessed have pointed this out — of the Church of the Lost Angels.
