The Confederate States of America

The CSA currently exists in an uneasy truce — really a cold war — with the USA of which it was formerly a part. It is recognized as an independent country by the UK and France, as well as by Deseret, Mexico (Imperial) and the two Indian nations. Richmond’s primary political goal is to maintain its independent status, and furthering that goal, to pay off the tremendous debt it owes to the UK. (The UK provided the funding to produce the compensated emancipation program the CSA implemented from 1864-65.) East of the Mississippi River the CSA’s northern border is an armed camp. Although it officially recognizes the Imperial government of Maximilian, there is a significant amount of support within some circles for Porfirio Diaz. The CSA has a national holiday every March 11 (Constitution Day) as an “Independence Day” doesn’t exist for the nation as a whole. Each state (but not the territories) celebrates its own “Secession Day” (sometimes called “Independence Day.”)
